Seattle: Home of... Mac and Cheese??

Posted by Karen |

So it's day 3 of my Seattle trip. Finally got internet access yesterday (for FREE) due to some technical difficulties we had with the so-called free internet in the lobby area. So quick summary of what's happened here so far:

DAY 1
Arrived Wednesday evening and went straight to our hotel, Hotel Andra, straight from the airport. Doesn't really feel like a hotel... more homey like feel. The room isn't too bad, but the bathroom is AWESOME (yes I have a thing for nicely designed bathrooms lol!)

It's a suite so there's a little living room, desk and TV (yes, that's Family Guy on the flat screen!). They do this really weird thing called a turndown: housekeeping comes to your room sometime between 6 and 9pm (before you return basically), they turn on your side lamps (which are an eerie blue), turn on the radio (aka static!) and close your room doors halfway. CREEPIEST thing I've ever returned to!

We're in downtown and about 15 minutes from the waters so we walked around the little shops near the Pike Fish Market. Seattle's actually really similar to Edmonton. Felt like I was walking down Jasper Ave and then there were areas that were as if I suddenly went to Vancouver. There's a small enclosed area in front of a hotel that felt just like I was in Korea's Ssamziegil in Insadong. First meal in Seattle was at a restaurant called Steelhead. BEST macaroni and cheese EVER made with local cheese from a store on the next street and the BEST Creme Brulee. It was Earl Grey Tea Creme Brulee with a cookie made with Olive Oil and Pine Nuts on top. SOOOOO good!! The decor was quite interesting as well! The night crowd in Seattle is quite... interesting (more like freaky!)

DAY 2
Apparently Veteran's Day is not a holiday here in the States. Tried to find the awesome breakfast place I went to the last time I came... which I found! Unfortunately it didn't really have anything to our liking for lunch. But if anyone gets the chance, go to Red Fin on Belltown for brunch... it's awesome! Great atmosphere too. Instead we ended up going to Il Fornaio for Italian and more creme brulee that was twice the size of the one from Steelhead!  Didn't do much cos it was raining... lazed around, went to the Grocery store near by to get caramel popcorn (mmmm...) and sat in the 2nd floor lounge area trying to connect to the internet. It really doesn't feel like a hotel cos they play house music in the lobbies and have couches everywhere. I quite like it!

DAY 3
Most eventful day since we got here! We made a list the day before of places to check out, things to see, and found there were lots of places for creative inspiration. First went to the glassblowing studio nearby with really awesome, but expensive, glassblown pieces. Walked to a card & stationary store called Clover House near an art academy. Then made our way to the Paramount Theatre and bought tickets to watch STOMP in the evening (YAY!)

After that, walked to Capitol Hill to find an artistic store I came across on Yelp called Cakespy Shop. Stopped at a books and coffee shop at the top of the hill (it was quite a trek uphill!) called Bauhaus. It's got a really nice atmosphere and it's full of artsy people who sit there and paint, read, wearing whatever they want (I was sitting next to what I thought was a girl wearing a hat in a dress and knee high boots , but turned out to be a guy...) It's also filled with a few freaky paintings with eyeballs being the main focus. They didn't have "commercial" drinks for pop and had really good chai (WAY stronger than in Edmonton). Over the speakers they played the Beatles... it was a wonderful atmosphere to sit back and relax in.

Made our way to Cakespy and I'm glad but at the same time wish I hadn't found it. It has amazing pieces of art from local artists and a cute pug named Porkchop who sat on my shoe, begging to be pet. The thing is I have this problem of buying art... and that's exactly what I did. I ended up investing in 2 beautiful pieces of limited edition works of Julie West and 2 more prints from Kurt Halsey. It hurt to part with the money, but I would have regret it more if I didn't buy it. Darn me and my impulse buying!!! Sadly, it wasn't really impulse buying either cos I contemplated for quite a long time in the store (about an hour) before I ended up buying them.

We went to a restaurant called Tango and I had the Bistec a la Parilla (aka good steak). Dessert wasn't too appetizing though, but we had to make our way to the theatre to watch STOMP.

STOMP was AMAZING!! It was as good as I thought it was going to be! It's absolutely amazing what those people can do with a bunch of stuff that you find lying around normally. It was funny at the same time! Definitely worth watching! Sat next to some really odd older folks that proved to me Seattlelites are really weird people.

I learned that people in Seattle REALLY love their cheese and it appears they may be the home of mac and cheese cos even if they don't have it, they have something similar or what looks like mac and cheese! I even saw a huge billboard advertising it!
