Japan was hit with an 8.9 mag earthquake yesterday, followed by a massive tsunami. I didn't even know about the earthquake until I got to the airport at 6am in the morning and the lady at the check-in told us that the Narita Airport was closed until further notice. I've been watching footage and reading articles online... it's a lot more devastating than I thought it was. I was getting messages, emails and phone calls to see if I was ok. I thank everyone for their concern =)
So now the airport has apparently reopened and we've rebooked our tickets to leave for Japan on Monday, March 14. While I'm excited to go to Japan since I've never been there before, at the same time I can't help but feel a little nervous. It seems a little weird that everyone's trying to leave Japan and go home but we're going there instead. I've been told that the news makes a bigger deal about the situation than it actually is and that it happened in North Japan so its impact on Tokyo is that it's merely an inconvenience. Yes this is coming from someone that's lived in Japan for a few years, but at the same time she's never experienced something of this scale while she was living there. How will she know what types of aftershock will occur? I know there are lots of earthquakes in Japan, but I've never been in one and there's definitely a high chance I will be experiencing one while I'm there. I am not looking forward to that at all.
Aside from that, we're going for a business trip but I don't know how great it's going to be. I'm sure this earthquake/tsunami will be on people's minds for a long time but going in so quickly after it happened to talk business is probably not the best thing to do. It feels a little inhumane and uncaring to me as well. It's like walking in going "Sorry for your loss but let's talk about business." She said business is usual in Tokyo already but it still just doesn't feel right to me. But then again, who am I to say anything. I've already voiced my concerns and opinions but whatever she decides I can't stop her. She's my boss and I've already paid for half of the flight.
Let's hope everything will work out fine. Let us for for Japan. Let us all pray for all those affected by the earthquake and tsunami.
